New Year Intention Setting Practices - Part 3 of 3 - May You Know Joy

We’re going to talk about New Year intention setting practices and this is Part 3 of 3.  In Part 1 we talked about the importance of reflection and I gave you some great questions to ask yourself.  In Part 2, we talked about Setting Intentions and in Part 3, we’ll talk about Creating Practices to support those intentions.

Let’s talk getting intentional for the New Year. Whether you have an established intention setting practice or are interested to get started, I have found this a great time of year to re-centre, reflect and to look ahead.

You’ve Laid the Groundwork

You’ve already laid all of the groundwork so, this part relates to the actions you are going to take. It’s not enough to think about things but, we’ve really go to do them. We need to be curious and willing to make mistakes. Furthermore, we need to be open hearted and allow the world to surprise and delight us.

Aspects of Your Life

For the various aspects of your life you chose to address, I encourage you think of 1 or 2 actions you could take to help you align with your intentions. Remember the actions don’t have to be big. In fact, when we choose small, simple steps, we are more likely to do them and each step moves us forward.

For example, if your goal is greater well-being, perhaps it’s getting out for a walk a few times a week.  Or, if you want to play more and creativity lights you up, perhaps you take yourself on a date to a book or art supply store.  Perhaps you haven’t made enough time for community and you’d like to get involved or simply see your friends more often. What are simple, actionable items that can connect you to your joy and help you live with greater intention.

I’m resharing the list from Part 2 should it be handy to have it here. We asked ourselves what are intentions were in each of these areas and now we’re aligning them with simple action items.

  • Health & Well-being
  • Relationships
  • Personal Development
  • Home
  • Community
  • Giving
  • Financial
  • Play
  • Adventure
  • Giving Back
  • Spiritual

Create Time

Create time in your day and life to live with intention.

First, you may want to start, continue or modify a morning practice. Taking a few moments every morning to set an intention is a powerful way to start your day. Furthermore, ending your day with a gratitude practice is a great way to build self-reflection into your schedule and it is also a peaceful way to drift off to sleep.

Next, for the action items you identified, choose times when you can undertake these tasks. Planning for them helps to make them happen. Most importantly, we are prioritizing our well-being and our most intentional life. Sometimes if we don’t create time, we get caught up in the busy-ness of every day life. It’s important to make time for yourself and the things that are important to you. I can guarantee that you’ll be glad you did.

Be Flexible

Lastly, I encourage you to be flexible. While we often do a nice big intention setting practice like this once a year, it is great to go back to it often. Life will throw us curveballs or we’ll simply change our minds so, please allow yourself to be flexible. Again, this is a gift from you to you so, allow yourself to modify as needed to create truly optimal intentions and a beautiful path forward.
